Local History of chopping boards
Pictured here is a drawing and small scale replica of a pastry board believed to have originated in the old county of Westmoreland. Before modern kitchen worktops were available, houses and farm
kitchens had to make do with a riven (rough cut) slab of stone - usually slate.
The rough unhygienic surface wasn't ideal for kneading bread or pastry, so a large piece of available wood would be used to cover over the slabs.
Pictured Below is our reproduction in Chestnut of a heritage pastry board. (next to my old boot by our kitchen fireplace)
